'96 model has a different engine control system (OBDII). It also has more O2 sensors (4 vs 2) than the earlier years - due to the updated control system. It's possible the exhaust system was modified to address this --- so there could be issues swapping in older parts. Manufacturers usually don't make part changes unless there's a good (cost justifiable ) reasons....
Just mentioning to verify - especially if living in a state where inspections are a hassle...
PS - Rusted bolts are the same issue regardless of where they are on the exhaust system. Most garages will use a torch to heat them up really well, breaking the rust lock. The also make nut spliters for things like this - but sometimes room for them to get in there is the problem...
